Notes from Phil Skinner who originally provided this registration: This is a 1959 Thunderbird Hardtop. It is Colonial White (E) with a black and white vinyl interior (8X). It was scheduled for production on December 6, 1958 (06M). It has Cruise-O-Matic transmission (4) and a 3.10:1 rear axle ratio (1). This Thunderbird was seen at the Mid-America Auction in Minnesota in May, 1995. Walter Warpeha says:
I bought this car in Minnesota in March,2003. It was originally from Longmount, Colorado. It is now modified into a street legal replica of 1 of 8 Holman/Moody 430 cubic inch '59 stockcars (1 of 4 zipper tops!). The stockcar had an Omaha owner, an Iowa driver, and was declared the winner of the 1st Daytona 500 before being overturned in a controversial decision. #73 had 9 top 11 wins in 12 NASCAR starts, 2 pole positions and holds the all-time NASCAR convertible qualifying record. It was likely the most sucessful T-Bird racer of the classic era. Local interest: it had a Minneapolis sponsor (KSTP television). It has these modifications: , 428 cubic inch engine, Aluminum intake, valve covers and air cleaner, C-6 transmission, custom exhaust exits front of rear wheels, Stewart Warner gauges, 15-inch 1966 Thunderbird wheels, Roll Bar, Wrapped Steering Wheel, Heavy Duty Sway Bar, Extra leaf added to rear springs, Bungee hold-downs for hood and trunk, Four point racing seat belt, Radio and heater delete, Battery in trunk, Graphics to match 1960 Daytona race. Three drivers raced the original #73 in 1959-60. Of the two that are living, one still lives in Omaha, the other in Oklahoma City.
