Bret Traywick says: I have owned my 1959 Thunderbird Convertible for about two years as of June, 2003. It was originally owned by a man in a nearby town. He was too ill to drive in his final years and the car sat in his garage for 10 years. I happened upon it when his family sold it to a friend who has an old car business and salvage yard. It has 47,000 miles and I am sure most of the paint is original. It is Raven Black with matching top. The interior is black with the black and white checkered cloth inserts. Power equipment includes windows, antenna and driver seat. I has an AM radio that still works well. It is an early production model because the top is not fully automatic, the trunk lid must be raised and lowered by hand. It also has fender skirts and most importantly the optional 430 cid Lincoln engine with Cruise-O-Matic transmission. Another one I do not plan on parting with. + + + + + UPDATE October 2012, Chris Brighton notified the Registry that he owns this Thunderbird. He says: I bought this 1959 Ford Thunderbird in Florida from Bret Traywick in August 2004 and it promptly underwent a no-expense-spared two-year restoration under the watchful eye of Paul Sgro at Lee’s Garage/Premier Motor Car in West Long Branch, New Jersey. This Square Bird came with 48,949 original miles and it now has about 50,400 miles. This near mint convertible runs great and has the optional 350-horsepower 430 cubic inch Special V8 with Cruise-O-Matic transmission — it is one of 1,168 made. Raven black with difficult to find 4X trim — I have about 10 extra yards of vintage material used for the seat inserts (yes, it was that hard to find that I bought a whole roll of it when the opportunity presented itself). Power equipment includes windows, antenna, and driver’s seat. - - - - -Of the 10,261 Convertibles It is impossible to definitively say how many of these 1,168 1959 Ford Thunderbird Convertibles with the 430 cu. in. Special V8 still exist. But according to tbirdregistry.com (as of October 9, 2012), there are only thirty-four 1959 Thunderbird Convertibles with the 430 cu. in. Special V8 — only 4 of these 34 were originally black, only 3 of these 4 are still black and only 2 of these 3 still have their 430 cu. in. Special V8; this car is one of those 2.
