This is a 1960 Thunderbird Hardtop. It is "Car #1" of two stainless steel body Thunderbirds. These two special Thunderbirds were ordered by Allegheny-Ludlum Steel Corporation of Brackenridge, Pennsylvania. The bodies were stamped and assembled at the Budd Body Plant in Detroit, then sent to the Wixom Assembly Plant for insertion into the regular line. The space on the data plate that is normally reserved for the color code has "DSO" for a Domestic Special Order: stainless steel. Both stainless steel cars have a red leather interior (85). This model was scheduled for completion on June 8, 1960 however the actual date is uncertain due to expected abnormalities that arose and special manufacturing procedures used in the assembly process. - - - - - - - - - - Both of the stainless steel Thunderbirds look as good today as the day they were manufactured; they are displayed at shows and museums nationwide and are always driven (never trailered). As of November 1999, RN 1512 had over 190,000 miles on the odometer. It currently is on display at the Crawford Auto Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. See RN 1513. - - - - - - - - - This Thunderbird was featured in the May 1996 edition of Cars and Parts, and the article includes a picture of the data plate.
