Todd Duhnke says: My father bought this 1960 Thunderbird Hardtop new from John Markel Ford, 61st and Northwest Radial Highway, Omaha, Nebraska on June 28th, 1960. He traded in his 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 convertible for $1,600.00.
This Thunderbird coupe was Briarcliffe Metallic Green with an all Black Leather interior. It was very attractive. The car listed for $5,128.90 according to the original window sticker, which I still have. It was equipped with power windows, Fender Shields, Cruise-O-Matic, Selectaire Conditioner, tinted glass, power brakes, power steering, windshield washer, AM pushbutton radio and 8:00X14 4 ply Rayon white wall tires. My father traded this car in on November 23, 1963 to Nick Neff Tire and Motor Company in Fremont, Nebraska for a new Mercury Colony Park station wagon. Nick Neff was the Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Fremont at the time. On a trip to western Nebraska in about the summer of 1966 we saw this Thunderbird parked at a restaurant in McCook, Nebraska. That's the last time we saw the car. She was readily identifyable not only by her unique colors, but also by the dog bite marks on the rear quarter panel upholstery, which were still present! We knew it was her for certain then! I still have the original John Markel Car Invoice, registration, Authorized Ford Dealer's Service Policy, Owner's Manual and original Window Sticker for this Thunderbird. As we no longer own the car the Door Tag Codes were taken from the Service Policy. It is interesting to note that these codes indicate that the car was built on June 22, 1960, just 5 days before my father and I found the car on the lot at John Markel Ford. My father went back the next day, June the 28th, and bought the car. Pretty short amount of time from when the car was built until it was sold. The possibility of a typo of the build date certainly exists. I have many original photographs of the car. I'll try to post one to this site soon. If anybody knows the whereabouts of this Thunderbird today, please contact me at tduhnke@cessna.textron.com, or call 316-636-5756. - - - Todd Duhnke, Wichita, Kansas
