This is a 1960 Thunderbird Hardtop. It is Raven Black (A) with a red and white vinyl interior (55). It has Cruise-O-Matic Drive (4) and a 3.10:1 rear axle ratio (3). It has power brakes, power steering, Console Radio, and MagicAire Heater. It was in Warwick, New York as of December, 2002. Tom Sheets says: Last Christmas (2002), I was looking at old Thunderbirds on eBay when I noticed a Raven Bblack 1960 Thunderbird with white and red interior. I thought it was beautiful. The bidding wasn’t very high at that point so I asked my wife (Jean) if she minded if I placed an early bid on it. Much to my surprise she told me to go for it.
Well, before long someone outbid me and I let it go. Later I received an email from the owner who said that the high bidder had not come through with the money and he wanted to know if I wanted the car at my bid - $6500. I responded with a resounding “yes” and purchased the car. The car was located in the mountains on the NewYork/New Jersey border. After many attempts to get a trucking company to pick it up and deliver it to my home in the Grtand Rapids, Michigan area, I gave up and drove to New Jersey to pick it up. It was bitter cold when I arrived at 10:00 PM on a cold January evening. The car started right up but was having problems warming up and continued to stall. I decided to wait until the following morning to plot my next move.
The next day I had it towed to a nearby location to have it worked on. It seems the float in the carb had a crack in it therefore the car was flooding out and spewing gas. The mechanic fixed the float and gave it a complete tuneup. The car ran strong! Unfortunately the mechanic seized the opportunity to rip me off on the cost of the parts, etc…he billed me $575.00 for his efforts including $60.00 for points and rotor and condensor (in actuality only about $17 in parts). On the drive home the car started to backfire at the New Jersey/Pennsylvania tool booth and stalled. Despite my best efforts, I could not get the car started. A police officer lined his bumper up to mine and pushed me through the toll booth. After a couple of hours, I got the car started again (very cold outside, it was miserable!). The car continued to backfire and broke down about 45 minutes later. My daughter (following in the car behind me) picked me up and I spent the night in a nearby town. Luckily I was able to locate a dealership that specialized in classic cars to work on the car the next day. They quickly noticed that the points had been incorrectly installed by the mechanic in New Jersey. They also noticed that he had taken advantage of me in his billing practices.
I was quickly on the road and made it the rest of the way home without incident. The car runs very, very well. It has a rebuilt and detailed 352 engine. The car is Raven Black with a red and white interior. There is some rust on the rocker panels that I will remove and repair in the summer of 2004. I love this Squarebird and I cannot wait to restore it to its former glory.
Tom also owns RN 13579 and RN 19073.
