The VIN and original components of a 1962 Thunderbird became what is known as the Italien, a concept car which was produced during the 1963 model year. Tom Maruska purchased it in 2005. He reports that the identification number on the car is NP129401. The prefix of "NP" was used by Dearborn Steel Tubing, the company that did the body modifications for the Italien. Tom reports that the Italien will soon call Duluth, Minnesota its home after being shipped from California. The picture was taken at the Ford Motor Company Proving Ground in Dearborn when the Italien was first assembled. The Italien was also photographed in 1963 when it made a publicity tour to
Florida. (see RN 16749) + + + + + + + + + + UPDATE June 2012, Dennis Dole reports it was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2008 Auction (Lot #1306) for $660,000. It is owned by Blackhawk Automotive Museum in Danville, California. UPDATE The actual VIN of the Italien is not known by the Registry at this time. Previously it had been in the Registry as 2Y85Z129401, however since then another 1962 Thunderbird with the last-six of 129401 has surfaced (RN 59005). The placeholder VIN of 2Y85Z999999 is being used by the Registry to identify the Italien for the time being.
