Steve Johnston says: I purchased my 1964 Thunderbird on 7/20/2005 from a guy who lived here in McPherson, Kansas. He said he found it in a field in Oklahoma about 3 years ago when he initially purchased it. The car is rough but very restorable as most of the parts are there. It is driveable and street legal, however I don't drive it except for moving it from the street to the garage.
The car has many nice features and options (some of course are standard on Tbirds): power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission, air conditoning, powe windows, power door locks, cruise control, passenger seat recliner, front and rear seat speakers plus other goodies and of course the Swing-Away Steering Wheel! All of these things were a selling point when I decided to buy the car.

I am planning a full ground-up restoration for "the bird" and have already gutted the interior. I am presently cleaning and painting interior components(gauges, armrest brackets, etc.)and also restoring interior aluminum/stainless steel trim. This is proving to be quite a challenge since I am "striping" off the anodizing on the aluminum in order to repair the nicks, dents and scratches. I plan on leaving the aluminum bare but highly polished and clearcoated.

As for the rest of the car: The motor seems strong, doesn't smoke and has good compression. The body is straight and only has a small area of rust behind the right rear wheel, however it does need front floor pans, trunk floor pan, and battery apron replacement.

Like I mentioned before it will be totally restored and I will do most of the work except final paint and some engine machine work that is outside of my ability or tool resourses. I am glad that I am starting with a solid car, this should help the restoration process.
When it is finished it will be kept in a garage and used mainly for car shows, parades, and "Sunday drives".
