Gary Swiatowy says: This 1968 Thunderbird 2-door Landau was purchased new at Al Maroone Ford in Williamsville New York by my grandfather. Options included the Flight Bucket Seats and console, High Axle Ratio ($6.53 extra), Tilt Wheel, Black Vinyl Roof. Total price was $5060.66.
It was Midnight Aqua, I really loved that color and seldom see it. I don't have a data plate on this but do have the original build sheet (it was Rotation Number 443) as well as all the original paperwork. Anyone wants a copy of the build sheet for any reason I could try scanning…..e-mail me.
This car was unusual in that it was built with a 460 instead of a 429. The 460 was not an available option, but I have heard later on that seeing as they came down the same line with the Lincolns, and the Lincolns had the same engine, if they were short on 429s they would stick in a 460. It even had the Continental Air cleaner and 460 tune up sticker on the valve cover.
This car was waaaaaaay too fast with that 460, but we had a lot of fun with it back in the day, including a little street racing. We had trouble keeping rear tires on it for some reason. Unfortunately this car was totalled when it hydroplaned on a curve and met a steel bridge with my brother driving. We kept the remains for several years picking off bits and pieces and a few actually remain in my attic. My brother still has the motor in his garage. The car was a one-family car - my grandfather passed it on to my father, my mother, then to me, and then to my brother.
