This is a 1976 Thunderbird Commemorative Edition. It is one of 32 special-edition Thunderbirds that were ordered by Ford's Cincinnati District Sales Office. The purpose was to celebrate the passing of the "Big Bird", which was due to be replaced by a smaller, less grand Thunderbird for 1977. None were sold outside the Cincinnati, Ohio and Charleston, West Virginia areas. Like all other 31 produced, this Thunderbird is Black with a silver half vinyl roof and a black leather interior. All Commemorative Edition Thunderbirds have gray glass moon roof and a trunk-mounted pseudo-spare wheel carrier, Convenience Group, Front Cornering Lamps, Steel Belted Radial Tires, Tilt Steering Wheel, Power Seat, AM-FM Stereo Radio, Protection Group, Wire Wheel Covers, and Tinted Glass. American Sunroof Company of Wixom, Michigan added the non-standard moon roof and "European Rear Deck" lid. Out of the 32 Commemorative Editions built and ordered by the Cincinnati DSO, 29 were sold in Ohio and 3 were sold in West Viriginia. As of March, 2003 the only Commemorative Edition accounted for is Registry Number 56 that belongs to Mark McRoberts. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - UPDATE August 2016, John Setter notified the Registry that he owns this Thunderbird. He says: Reed Banks was the original owner and drove it off the showroom floor from Woody Sanders Ford-Cincinnati, OH on
Aug. 31, 1976. The dealer told him this commemorative edition was made for the Cincinnati/Dayton Dealer group as a promotion to celebrate the 200th birthday of the nation. It has 76,812 Actual Miles. It has been garaged at Monroe Ohio since its purchase in 1976. It is in very good shape. My Sister-in-Law is Reed Banks daughter. I purchased the car July 23, 2016 from Reed's estate. It's color is Black Starfire (Special Silver Metallic paint-code NA-not listed in any ford color charts). It has the ASC electric moon roof, black half vinyl roof, fake spare tire on decklid, and black leather interior. I plan on a full restoration. I need help on finding the Black Starfire paint (or a current black metallic paint that could be substituted) Looking for suggestions.
