Ron Portland says:I purchased my 1955 Thunderbird as a used car near Lancaster Pennsylvania on June 9, 1965 for $1,425. With 5% tax and $15 license the total came to $1,511.25. The car had approximately 65,000 miles on it. ------------
At about 67,000 miles I had the engine rebuilt at the local Ford dealer and took the car to college in Iowa. After college in 1967 I drove it to New York City and my new job. Realizing that New York City was not the ideal place to keep the car, I immediately drove it to my parents' garage in North Carolina, where it remained until 1999, when I had it shipped to my home in Kansas City.-------During those 32 years in North Carolina the car was maintained and driven some: a total of about 2,000 miles. While there, in 1993 the body was stripped of all ornamentation, taken to bare metal and repainted. ------- The car remains very close to original. For reliability, the electrical system has been upgraded from 6 to 12 volts. Radial tires have been fitted to improve handling, along with replica 1962-63 Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels to add sparkle. And it’s been air conditioned in the style of a mid-fifties dealer installed system.
